Professor J.W. Verret is an Associate Professor of Law at George Mason University’s Antonin Scalia Law School, where he teaches corporate, banking, and securities law alongside a nationally recognized “Forensic Accounting for Lawyers” course. A licensed CPA in Virginia, he also holds credentials in financial forensics (CFF), fraud examination (CFE), valuation analysis (CVA), and cryptocurrency forensics (CCFI).
Courts nationwide have certified Professor Verret as an expert, most notably in U.S. v. Sterlingov, a $300 million crypto-money-laundering trial. He has testified in high-stakes securities and M&A disputes—including New Jersey v. Sprint and Landsdowne v. OpenBand—and regularly consults on arbitration matters subject to strict NDAs.
Beyond the courtroom, Professor Verret’s policy insight stems from service on the SEC’s Investor Advisory Committee and the Financial Accounting Standards Advisory Council, as well as previous roles as Senior Counsel & Chief Economist to the U.S. House Financial Services Committee and Independent Chair of a nationally recognized credit-rating agency. He began his career clerking on the Delaware Court of Chancery and holds a JD from Harvard Law School, an MPP from the Harvard Kennedy School, a BS in Accounting from LSU, and a Wharton certificate in blockchain economics.
